Part 11, in which fate decides to be a rollercoaster. Enjoy.

The two spent the next few days scouting the area. Mark really just wanted to explore, but Rain was always busy scouting for footpaths that tourists might come down. He felt guilty because she was working hard searching all day, then hunted for their food in the evening. Fortunately, game was plentiful and they ate well.
Seemingly clean, the lake became Mark's main source of water. On the third day after their arrival he bathed for the first time in ages. Rain disapproved of him washing his filth off in the drinking water, but at that moment he didn't really care. He just wanted to be clean. I'll wash further away next time, I promise, Mark grudgingly said, drying himself as Rain glared at him.
Five days after arrival Rain found a hiking path on the far side of the lake. Thought it was far away from where they were camping, Rain explained that she didn't want to risk it, so they moved a few yards away from the shoreline. There Mark considered their next move. It was like Minecraft, almost; they had to create a shelter from what they had.
Because they were in the mountains, there wasn't much to make a shelter from besides rocks. At night Rain kept Mark tucked under her wing as a replacement for a tent. On the sixth day Rain tried moving some boulders into place side-by-side, but even with Mark helping they barely moved anything. So she headed off to find more materials for them to work with.
While she was gone, Mark worked on creating a fireplace. It was pretty simple, just a ring of stones with a slight dip in the middle. Their camp was set on pebbles so there wasn't much to burn, but you could never be too careful, Mark figured.
It was very late when Rain got back. Mark was starting to get worried, dusk had settled over the mountains.  Where were you? he asked worriedly, watching her as she dragged a sapling into camp.
I was attacked. Two large exposed gashes were carved into Rain's shoulder. Mark could see it as she turned it towards him. Some sort of big creature with branches on it's head. Bigger than a deer.
Quickly approaching her, Mark examined her wounds. Despite all my Surgeon Simulator experience, I'm no doctor. he said. The best I can think of is we tear up one of my blankets and use it as a bandage or something.
Rain helped to tear a blanket with her teeth and they wrapped it in a loop up around her neck, over her shoulder and under her leg. The crimson droplets soaked into the cloth quickly and Mark hoped she would heal fast. There wasn't enough blankets to change her bandages very often.
Three days later, they were still in a state of disrepair. Mark didn't know how to make a shelter, he was a city boy. There was a more limited supply of food because Rain couldn't hunt very well. Plus, her wounds had gotten infected, preventing her from standing much at all. He didn't know how he could fix things. It was his job to make things better, and he couldn't.
   Then things changed.
Out at the lake, getting some water, Mark noticed an odd reflection on the surface. He traced it and looked up, but it had gone behind a cloud, too swiftly for him to really look at it. Not really noting it, he returned to their camp, checking in with Rain.
Rain was silent for a second. Open your mind up, Mark. she murmured. I can feel something.
To the best of his abilities, Mark expanded his thoughts. Yes, there was something there...like distant shouting. Pinpointing it was so difficult...but it was getting closer.
   Itisgetting closer, Rain agreed.
A few slow minutes ebbed away, and the faint mental noise seemed to be dying down.
Suddenly, a cloud shifted to reveal a brilliant streak of auburn in the sky. A roar echoed out over the mountains, a greeting and a challenge.
   Mark and Rain weren't alone.
Markiplier is his own person and I am not the writer of the Inheritance Cycle, but Rain and story line belong to me.
